GREENWICH, Conn., July 24 —C. Raymond Westcott, the defending champion from the host Greenwich Cove Racing Association, won both races with Eaglet today when the Ensign Class Long Island Sound championship regatta began in light easterly breezes over Olympic courses of 5½ and 9½ miles. One race tomorrow completes the series, which drew entries from the seven L.I.S. fleets.
With 1½ points, Westcott held a 6½-point lead over James B. Fox of Noroton Y.C., who was fifth and third for 8 points.
Fifth at the first windward mark in the opening race, West cott took the lead on the spinnaker reach and stayed ahead. He trailed John M. Calimafde, also of Greenwich Cove, in the second race until the second weather leg, sailed in front. wilan Calimafde failed to cover him as they rounded.
David Murphy and Louis Drypolcher are sailing with the defender.
